Marea Museum
El Museo Marea está dedicado a recoger, investigar y transmitir la memoria de las gentes del mar.
This modern installation located in the historic centre of Porto do Son houses an ethnographic collection that brings us closer to both the professional and domestic spheres of the world of the sea.
Old fishing gear, old photographs, oral stories, a well-kept, open-plan exhibition space and modern communication media (video loops and a 1960 documentary filmed in Porto do Son) speak of the experiences of the women and men of this coastline.
The exhibition tour begins on the ground floor showing different fishing gear, and the difficulties of sailing in the past with the high cost of shipwrecks, particularly numerous on the coast of the Ría de Muros-Noia and recalling the Prestige catastrophe. On the upper floor are displayed shellfishing tools, trawlers, and objects and images about the sardine salting industry, canned seafood,… The last space places us in an intimate atmosphere while people from the Son tell us, in first person, about their experiences.
The Marea Museum is open all year round and also serves as a tourist information point. For group or school visits, please call 981853431.
